Laying Foundations Before Twenty: What to Build Before You Grow

By David Iwuji

“If the foundations be destroyed, what can the righteous do?” — Psalm 11:3 (KJV)

Before any building rises, a foundation must be laid. Before God raises a person, He first builds them deep.

Your teenage years are not for show—they’re for structure. This is the season where you lay the foundation for your future. Because the strength of a life is not in its beauty, but in its base.

1. Why Foundations Matter

You don’t prepare for life when you’re already grown. You prepare for life before you turn twenty. Success doesn’t start on the stage—it starts in secret.

“He that is faithful in that which is least is faithful also in much…” — Luke 16:10 (KJV)

Before God can trust you with the “much,” you must prove faithful in the hidden things. Foundations are the habits, disciplines, and decisions that will sustain your calling.

2. Build the Foundation of Faith

Before twenty, you must know:

  • Who God is
  • What you believe
  • Why you believe it

Don’t inherit your faith—own it. Study the Word. Ask questions. Learn doctrine. Build your life on truth, not trends.

“Whosoever heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them… I will liken him unto a wise man, which built his house upon a rock.” — Matthew 7:24 (KJV)

When your faith is deep, no storm can break you.

3. Build the Foundation of Prayer

Prayer is not optional—it’s foundational. It’s the power cord of your spiritual life.

Develop a prayer life now. Not when you marry. Not when you become a pastor. Now.

“Pray without ceasing.” — 1 Thessalonians 5:17 (KJV)

The earlier you learn to talk with God, the more victories you’ll walk in later.

4. Build the Foundation of the Word

The Bible is your blueprint. It’s your sword, your mirror, and your manual. Before twenty, make it a habit to read, study, and meditate on it daily.

“Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.” — Psalm 119:105 (KJV)

The Word will shape your decisions, sharpen your mind, and strengthen your spirit.

5. Build the Foundation of Wisdom

Wisdom is not just about school—it’s about life. Ask God for wisdom in your choices, friendships, time, and emotions.

“Wisdom is the principal thing; therefore get wisdom: and with all thy getting get understanding.” — Proverbs 4:7 (KJV)

Surround yourself with godly mentors. Learn from those ahead of you. Read books that grow your mind. Don’t waste your teenage years being ignorant.

6. What Happens If You Don’t Build?

Without a strong foundation:

  • You’ll be easily broken by pressure
  • You’ll fall into sin repeatedly
  • You’ll be confused about your identity
  • You’ll struggle to rise into purpose

God’s desire is not just to save you—but to build you. And He builds those who submit to His process.

Final Charge: Let God Build You Deep

Before you turn twenty, don’t just seek platforms. Seek pillars. Don’t just seek to rise. Seek to be rooted.

Let your private life be stronger than your public life. Let your relationship with God go deeper than your followers. Let your convictions be stronger than your feelings.

God is building something eternal in you. Let Him lay the foundation now—so your future won’t crumble later.
