Voices That Shape Your Future: Why Mentorship Matters

By David Iwuji

“Where no counsel is, the people fall: but in the multitude of counsellors there is safety.” — Proverbs 11:14 (KJV)

You were never created to figure out life alone. In every generation, God raises voices of wisdom—mentors—to guide, instruct, warn, and build you up.

Before you turn twenty, your future depends on the voices you listen to. Some voices will drain you. Others will build you. Mentorship can make the difference between failure and fulfillment.

🧠 What Is Mentorship?

Mentorship is when someone who has walked a path helps you walk it better. It’s a relationship of wisdom, guidance, and accountability.

You may have talent. You may have fire. But without a mentor, you may lack direction—and even fire without direction can destroy.

💡 Why You Need a Mentor Before You Turn Twenty

1. They See What You Don’t

Mentors have perspective. They can see ahead, around corners, and behind your blind spots. They help you avoid mistakes before they become scars.

“He that walketh with wise men shall be wise…” — Proverbs 13:20 (KJV)

2. They Call Out What’s In You

A good mentor doesn’t just teach—they awaken. They see your potential, call it out, and help you become what God already designed you to be.

3. They Keep You Accountable

You can’t grow alone. Mentorship adds structure, checks, and encouragement when life gets tough. Without accountability, fire fades.

⛔️ Warning: Not All Voices Are Safe

The wrong mentor can mislead you. Fame is not mentorship. Popularity is not wisdom. Before you submit your life to someone’s voice, check their fruit:

  • Do they live what they teach?
  • Do they point you to Jesus or to themselves?
  • Are they submitted to authority themselves?
“By their fruits ye shall know them.” — Matthew 7:20 (KJV)

🙏 How to Find the Right Mentor

  • Pray About It: Don’t just pick who’s trendy; pick who’s God-sent.
  • Observe Them: Watch their life, values, consistency, and character.
  • Start Small: Read their books, listen to their sermons, attend their teachings.
  • Reach Out Humbly: Mentorship often starts with a seed of honor and service.
  • Stay Teachable: Mentorship only works when pride dies.

👑 Final Words: Submit to Voice Before You Step into Vision

Before God gave Samuel a national assignment, He gave him Eli’s voice. Before Elisha became a prophet, he served Elijah. Even Jesus, at twelve, sat under teachers in the temple.

You’re not too young for mentorship. You’re at the perfect age to be molded.
